New and Improved Monday, May 14: Mckendy Fils-Aimé and Simone Beaubien

NEW SERIES: A workshop and double feature at Radio in Union Square!

On Monday, May 14, Mckendy Fils-Aimé will present a 7:00 p.m. workshop at Radio, 397 Somerville Ave. in Union Square, Somerville. An open mic will follow at 8:00, and at 9:00 Mckendy will share feature time with Simone Beaubien. Admission is $5 and the show is 21+.

Mckendy Fils-Aimé is a four-time competitor at the National Poetry Slam, having represented Worcester, Manchester, and the Boston Poetry Slam. He is also a two-time NorthBEAST Regional Slam individual finalist, ranking third in 2011. In 2012, he will represent the Boston Poetry Slam at NPS in Charlotte in August and at the Individual World Poetry Slam in Fayetteville in October.

Mckendy has shared the stage with the likes of Corrina Bain, Mike McGee, and Regie Gibson. In January of 2011, he toured the country as part of a poetry quartet called No More Ribcage. Some of his work can be found in literary journals such as Amoskeag, Radius, Smashcake, and Borderline. Currently, he has three self-published books and is working on a manuscript.

A New Hampshire resident, Mckendy commutes regularly to the Cantab for the Wednesday open mic and slam, but continues to run frequent writing workshops as part of the Slam Free or Die crowd up north.

Mckendy will serve as the workshop leader for the New and Improved Monday series at Radio in his first local workshop appearance! Get ready to produce some work with a New Hampshire flair.

Simone Beaubien might be the busiest person you know. SlamMaster of the Boston Poetry Slam and founding curator for Radio Mondays, she works full-time as a paramedic and also occasionally remembers to breathe. She is a seven-time competitor at the National Poetry Slam, including a stint on Finals stage in 2008, and a scheduled speaker for the upcoming TEDxBoston talks this June. Simone will arrive at New and Improved with fresh work from her spring tour in Omaha, Nebraska.


NEW AND IMPROVED MONDAYS continues on Monday, May 14 at Radio, a new bar and performance space at 379 Somerville Ave., Union Square, Somerville. Doors open for the show at 6:30 p.m. with the workshop beginning at 7:00. Open mic begins at 8:00 and the double-feature will take the stage at 9:00. Cover charge is $5 and the show is 21+.
