Happy new calendar year, Cantabbers! We kicked off 2020 this past Wednesday with a cozy and enthusiastic group cheering their hearts out for Suzanne O’Toole, our steadfast and super-smart perennial open mic opener. Suzanne squeezed a record amount of poems into her set, but also a record amount of tenderness and welcome: a happy beginning, indeed.
After the feature, you know we’re qualifying poets for the 2020 slam team all this month (and again in March). A mighty crew of three took the stage for a head-to-head speed slam this week, and emerging with a first-ever victory was David Donna, who just edged out Emily Duggan in the final round. Both poets qualify to come try out for the team in the spring.
This weekend: it’s the first new year of Moonlighting, our monthly queer open mic and reading series! January kicks off with featured readers Levi Cain and Red Maienza, plus YOU on the open mic, on Sunday, January 5 at the Democracy Center.
Next week: need more energy and inspiration for 2020? Cantab’s got you– 2018 BPS team member Meaghan Ford will be our feature, plus an open slam to end the night (and rumors of a guest star bartender). See you there!
