The Boston Poetry Slam holds a weekly show called New & Improved every Monday upstairs at Radio, where all genres of performance art are welcomed to the stage. Because the show is dedicated to inspiring art across genres, as well as helping to unify the sometimes-splintered Boston arts scenes, performance artists of all stripes are encouraged to visit and enjoy the experience of a highly engaged, poetry-trained audience.
The cover charge for the show is $5 and the age limit is strictly 21+. No tickets are sold in advance. No outside drink is allowed— please patronize the bar— but you may bring food to eat in the venue until the kitchen opens (scheduled for fall of 2012). The upstairs portion of Radio is handicap-accessible: however, the bathrooms are not (they are located downstairs).
Doors open at 6:30 for a 7:00 workshop, which is open to all interested parties. Frequently the workshop is a generative writing workshop led by the featured poet, but some nights a different focus is offered: check the schedule for further details. Non-workshoppers are of course welcome to arrive during workshop time; please be respectful of those who are working.
An open mic begins at 8:00, wherein artists of all kinds are invited to sign up to read or perform. The time limit is a strict five minutes. At 9:00, the featured poet performs, and the visiting artist (such as a musician, playwright, or storyteller) performs thereafter. The bar remains open until approximately 11:00 to permit our community to socialize and purchase product from our features.
